Painting Inspiration:

I remember my elders using flowers, plants, and food to describe someone’s hair texture. Oooo her hair is as stiff as hay, as soft as cotton, as stringy as corn silk, as hard as weeds, or as smooth as silk. And if you’re African American, we all know that the naps at the back of the head are referred to as the kitchen. I came across a bunch of thistle flowers last summer by my mom’s house and started to study the similarities of it and hair. The thistle flower has a Don King like hair shape (If you know you know). And I had one hell of a time picking the thistle flowers to reference. They will pierce straight through your fingers and rubber gloves. It’s a relentless flower with a lot of texture and patterns; just like our hair. Enjoy this relaxing hair painting performance of “Thistle Patterns.”
